Deb Wright Wins Bronze at IBSA Games

Congratulations to Deb Wright of Wellingborough OAC for finishing in 3rd place at the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) World Games, held at the Athletics grounds of the University of Birmingham between 14-27 August.

With 27 competitors, 10 countries, 12 international classifications; this year’s World Blind Games was the biggest international VI event ever.

This result ranks Deb 3rd in the world in her division. Team GB won 2 gold medals, 3 silver and 1 Bronze medal in Archery during this event.

Deb said: “I’m really pleased to have been part of TeamGB in these games, the first time Archery has been included.”

Held ever 4 years all over the world the next IBSA Games will be in 2027, location not yet disclosed.

“I am pleased to let you know that I successfully defended both of my outdoor titles in September at Lilleshall and broke my personal bests and own National records.

On Saturday 10th September both Myself and Caroline Malcolmson from WOAC Wellingborough Open Archery Club, attended the National Disabled Championships. We both got our rankings in the morning and shot our head-to-head matches in the afternoon.

Caroline won Silver in her category of Womens Compound and I won Gold in my category of VI Unclassified Recurve (also known as VI Open category).

On Sunday 11th September British Blind Sport held their National Outdoor Championships, we had a delayed start due to very heavy fog, when we first got on the field you could only just see the targets at 30 metres. For range safety, we had to wait an hour for the fog to lift sufficiently so the judges and spotters could see the overshoot area.

I have defended my National Outdoor title successfully with British Blind Sport since 2015, when I obtained this title within my first 7 months of becoming certified as a competent Archer following my beginners course.

I also attended the NCAS County & Open Championships the weekend after on Sunday 18th September where I was presented with a gold medal for the VI Open category. I broke my own national record and personal best from the weekend before.

I have made it my mission this year to continually improve and beat my own personal bests, county, regional and national records and have improved on almost every shot I have attended during this year’s outdoor season.

I have been awarded part funding from the Worshipful Company of Fletchers to attend the British Blind Sport coaching session at Stoke Mandeville Stadium in January and March 2023 and am very grateful to have the continued support of the Worshipful Company of Fletchers to enable me to do this.

I am looking forward to the up coming Indoor season and beating by own personal bests. Development of my archery and continual improvement is so rewarding for me, it helps my mental health a great deal and gives me the drive and determination to tackle all head on.”

Deb Wright back winning awards

Deb Wright of Wellingborough Open Archery Club was invited to the Royal Toxophilite Society for the Fletchers Day for Archers with a Disability on 14th May 2022.

Deb won her category of Visual Impaired Archer, scoring 766 for the Burntwood Albion round, beating her own county record and person best. She was awarded a hand made box and pen, made by the previous master of the fletchers, from English Cherry wood.

Deb has previously had funding approved by the Worshipful Company of Fletchers to help with monthly coaching sessions held at Stoke Mandeville Stadium November 2021 January 2022 and March 2022.

The coaching sessions have helped Deb return to archery after having had Ulnar nerve release surgery, and a prosthetic disc implanted into her neck with vertebrae above and below it fused, all done at the Woodlands Hospital during the first lockdown in March 2020.

Deb retained her National Indoor title for Visually Impaired Open Recurve at Lilleshall in April 2022 with British Blind Sport. She has held this title since 2016.

She also defended and retained her National Outdoor title with British Blind Sport in September 2021 at Lilleshall, having held this since 2015.

On the same weekend in September 2021 Deb competed in the National Disabled Championships at Lilleshall, where she won first place for the VI Open category.

Deb plans on defending her outdoor titles again at Lilleshall in September this year.

Deb will be shooting more of the county competitions, where possible, and looks forward to meeting up with like minded archers and new and old friends.

Deb Wright of Pemberton Maid Marions was invited to the Royal Toxophilite Society Fletchers Day for Archers with a Disability on 12th May.

Deb won her category of Visual Impaired Recurve, scoring 744 for the Burntwood Albion round.  She was awarded a hand made box and pen, made by the previous master of the fletchers, from English Cherry wood.

“In April earlier this year I attended the British Blind Sport National Indoor Championships at Lilleshall where I retained my National Indoor title with the British Blind Sport for VI Open recurve. I have held this title since 2016.

In June I also attended the 2nd year of the National Disability Championships at Lilleshall sponsored by The Worshipful Company of Fletchers (who have heavily invested in both sponsorship and promoting disabled archery) where I came 2nd in my Category of VI Open. Last year I came 1st. This is the only event I shoot at, where compound and recurve archers shoot against each other in the same sight categories.

I also attended the British Blind Sport National Outdoor Championships at Lilleshall the 1st weekend in September to defend my National Outdoor title in the VI open category for recurve.

I am pleased to report I retained my National Outdoor title. I have held since i started target archery in 2015.

I am a Visually Impaired Archer who has shot recurve since 2015, I shoot regularly with my club Pemberton Maid Marions and also practise with my local club Archers of Raunds.

It still fills me with happiness every time I pick up my bow, whether it be in practice or competition, and still have the same excitement for the sport as I had on my first taster session.

This sport is accessible to every person and I would urge you to give it a try and maybe find a sport you love, like i do.
