2011 ended with plenty of county records in December.

David Quemby of Northampton Archery Club set a new Gents Compound county record for a Triple Portsmouth with a total score of 1677. David achieved the record at Wellingborough OAC’s Open Portsmouth Tournament on 13th November.

On 9th December during an open club evening, Archie McDougal of Targetcraft Archers broke the Gents Longbow Worcester record with 168, beating the previous score of 142 set by David Plater of Nene Bowmen just a few weeks before.

Katie Bayliss of Archers of Raunds set a new Junior Ladies Recurve county record for a Bray 1 round with 238. Katie achieved the record during the Junior County training session on 10th December.

Kayleigh Dunkley of Kettering Archers has two new Junior Ladies Barebow records. The first came during the clubs annual Frostbite shoot on 11th December where Kayleigh scored 226. The second came on 16th December during a club target day session where Kayleigh scored 382 points for a Double Worcester round.

Kettering Archers held an open Flight shoot on 18th December. John Bosworth of Kattering Archers broke his own previous Class D Flatbow 50lb record with a new distance of 232 yards 1 feet 7 inches. His previous record of 218 yards 1 feet 8 inches was set in December 2008.

Bradley Denny broke the Junior Gents Recurve record for a Frostbite round with 309. Bradley achieved the score at Long Buckby Archery Clubs annual open Frostbite shoot on 27th December. The previous record of 300 was held by James Mason of WOAC since May 2000.

At Wicken Archery Club’s annual Frostbite shoot on 31st December, Nicola Lawrence of Wicken AC set a new Ladies Longbow county record for a Double Frostbite with 230. And Corin Brearley also of Wicken AC set a new Gents Longbow record for the Double Frostbite with 213.

Saturday 3rd December was the Junior event, the format once again a single Portsmouth round.

Bradley Denny of Archers of Raunds finished in 6th place in the Gents Recurve Under 16′s with a great score of 562. Bradley was last years Under 14′s national champion having now moved up into the next age group.

In the Ladies Recurve Under 16′s, Katie Bayliss also of Archers of Raunds shot very well and finished in 8th place with 525. Lauren Phillips also of AOR placed 13th with 469, very closely followed in 14th by Leonie Allen of Targetcraft also on 469 but with 1 less gold.

Katherine Langton of Wicken Archery Club placed 7th in the Ladies Recurve Under 12′s with 441.

Jon Bull of Targetcraft placed 5th in the Gents Compound Under 18′s with a great score of 579.

Josh Hall of WOAC shot very well and placed 2nd in the Gents Compound Under 16′s with 571.

The senior event format once again like last year consisted of a qualifying round where the top 32 archers go through to the knock-out stages.

Lizzie Cantopher of WOAC shooting in her first indoor nationals, continued her great indoor season by qualifying in 15th place in the Ladies Recurve with 530. Lizzie shot well in her first round match but only won one set to lose 6-2 to Hannah Beasley-Suffolk of Malvern Archers.

In the Gents Recurve division. Gyorgy Zsiga of Long Buckby AC was the counties highest placed archer qualifying in 22nd place with 549. Despite shooting well, Gyorgy lost his first round match 6-5 to John Prior of Supermarine Bowmen. Dean Edwards of WOAC was unable to continue his recent good form finishing 37th with 539 so not qualifying for the knock-out stages. Neither did David Forster of Nene Bowmen who placed 39th with 536. James Mason of WOAC was forced to retire during the qualifying round.

In Gents Compound, Josh Hall of WOAC took part in his first senior nationals finishing in 61st place out of 100 with an excellent 560. His dad Gary Hall placed 82nd despite having a release aid problem. Paul Blamire also of WOAC placed 49th with 566.

In the Ladies Compound, Jude Hall shooting in her first nationals qualified for the knock-out stages in 30th place with 546, setting up a first round match against GB team member Andrea Gails. Jude found herself two sets down at 4-0 but managed to pull the match back to 5-5! This meant a one arrow shoot off which was decided by just half a millimetre difference in favour of Andrea. Helen Neumann of WOAC also shooting in her first Nationals placed 39th with 523.

The format of the competition consisted of a first phase group stage with archers placed in groups of six, shooting 12 arrow head to head matches. The top two from each group with the most match points automatically qualify for phase two, along with the highest scoring runners up.

Paul Blamire of WOAC found himself in one of the toughest Gents Compound groups, facing some top international names including Peter Elzinga, John Stubbs and Reuben Bleyendaal. Despite putting up a good fight Paul didn’t manage to qualify for the next phase.

David Forster of Nene Bowmen shot well and came through his group in 2nd place winning all of his matches other than the one against Michael Peart.

Dean Edwards of WOAC and Gyorgy Zsiga of LBAC found themselves in the same group alongside GB archer Mark Nesbitt, and top irishman Keith Hanlon. Dean won four of his matches and drew one to finish joint top with Keith Hanlon on match points. Gyorgy shot well winning three of his matches to finish 3rd in the group, qualifying through to Saturdays second phase as one of the highest place runners up.

Saturdays second phase once again consisted of another group stage. This time David Forster and Gyorgy Zsiga were paired in the same group. David couldn’t continue his good form from the day before, But Gyorgy managed to win 3 of his matches and was unlucky to finish 3rd in the group with again only the top two progressing to the next phase.

Dean’s group included GB archer Alan Will’s, England team member Gavin Sutherland, national series finalist Andrew Randall, former Scotland team member Mark Forster and Jamie Adams. Starting well Dean won his first match against Gavin Sutherland and drew in his match against Andrew Randall before losing his other matches to finish 5th.

Also at Nene Bowmen’s Celebration Shoot in July, Angela Bray broke her own Ladies Barebow county record for a Windsor round with 476. Her previous score of 418 stood since July 2010.

Kettering had a club target day on 20th November shooting Warwick rounds. Derek Bett has broken his own Gents Barebow record for a Warwick round with 376. His previous score of 350 stood since July 2009. On the day Derek also set a new Double Warwick record with 724. Shahram Montasser set a new Gents Recurve record for a Double Warwick with 740. Fred Aldridge shot a new Gents Longbow record for a Double Warwick with 321. Todd Burlington set a new Junior Gents Recurve record also for a Double Warwick with 654. And Elaine Catt improved on her own Ladies Longbow record for a Warwick with 98. Her previous score of 88 was set in July 2009.

Another club target day on 25th November, this time indoors shooting a Bray 1 round. Kayleigh Dunkley broke the Junior Ladies Barebow record with 153. The previous record of 115 was held by Lauren Bosworth since December 2010. Sam Lewin also broke his own previous Junior Longbow record with a new score of 66. His previous score of 32 was also set in December 2010. Kieran Dunkley also broke his own previous Junior Gents Barebow record with a new score of 49. His previous score of 45 was again also set in December 2010. And finally Derek Bett has also broke his own previous Gents Barebow record with an impressive 240. His previous score of 234 was once again also set in December 2010.

The event organised by EMAS Coaching Organiser Jim Johnson, was originally the idea of EMAS Chairman Alan Staples who sadly passed away earlier this year. For several years there has been a junior EMAS squad system in place, with regular coaching sessions, and a couple of annual tournaments. But there hasn’t been anything organised for an EMAS senior squad since the 1980′s.

For the event, Northamptonshire sent Lizzie Cantopher (ladies recurve), Dean Edwards (gents recurve), James Mason (gents recurve), Jude Hall (ladies compound) and Gary Hall (gents compound).

After a short talk and introduction by Jim, the group shot a Bray I together if they wished and were encouraged to discuss with each other what they wanted to see EMAS doing and the potential for a future senior squad system. EAF Representative Les Smeaton also gave a short talk about the role of the English Archery Federation.

At the end of the session Jim thanked everyone for coming, saying he was encouraged by the feedback and would look at organising something else in the new year and hopefully work up some ideas for a senior squad.
